Where’s the trail count?
Good bye trail count, hello reality. Attitash has changed its snow reporting philosophy to focus on open skiable acreage. By officially dropping out of the trail count game to report open acreage, Attitash is setting a new industry standard in snow reporting accuracy. You can’t put a spin on acres. No fudging reality, just straightforward, honest snow reporting.
Why?
Give me a trail and I’ll give you three … sound familiar? The ski industry has come to define one actual trail with an upper, middle and lower, thus giving you the illusion that three trails are open, when in all reality it’ simply a third of a trail. Like you, we are all skiers and riders, and want an honest, accurate snow report – not a third of a truth.
No trail count? How will I know what’s open?
As we drop the trail count field from our snow reports, replacing it with open acreage, Attitash will let you know how many acres, and what percentage of the whole mountain is open. We will continue to let you know exactly which trails are open, along with their grooming status. Everything else – like snowfall tallies, snow conditions, base depth, etc. – will be reported as usual.
What exactly is an acre?
An acre is approximately the size of a football field. In the case of Attitash, take a trail of 20 meticulously groomed, snow laden football fields laid out end to end, toss in a couple of turns with an amazing view of the White Mountains and Mount Washington and you’ll get the idea.
What is open and what is closed?
If a trail has enough snow to sustain a skier or rider, we’ll open it up. We realize there are those of you who live for ungroomed, “classic New England” trails, and we’re not about to change that.
How will tree skiing be affected?
Attitash has over 30 acres of designated glade terrain. From now on, glades will be open AT ALL TIMES – from opening day to closing day. This also includes boundary to boundary skiing. Please use caution and sound judgment. Tree skiing will not be included in overall acreage statistics.
Are Terrain Parks included in the acreage count?
Terrain parks will be included in overall acreage statistics.

As always, watch for obstructions both natural and manmade. Ice, thin spots, bare spots and variations on the snow surface can and will exist.
