Hello Program Directors/Head Coaches:

As you know, the Attitash Race Team has been hosting the Stan & Dan's race at the beginning of the season for over 25 years. The race has traditionally been a GS but has sometimes been run as a SL. This year we'll be doing something different and we're hoping for your support. Details of the race can be found below.

Race Date: Thursday, Dec. 29
Location: Attitash
Trail: Spillway
Race Type: Dual GS - Athletes must be USSA certified and pre-registered with your team
Format: Each racer gets two runs - one on each course. Best combined times will rank racers for a Top 4 Shootout.
Top 4 Shootout: Time/weather permitting, the top 4 racers of each age group/gender (J3 boys, J3 girls, J4 boys, etc.) will participate in a shootout for 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th. In the first run, Racer #1 will compete against racer #4 and racer #2 vs. #3. In the second run, racers will switch courses and race again. Winning racers move to finals, losing racers compete in consolations. Same format. If a racer falls in the first run, they will be assigned a 1.5 second penalty for the second run. If the winner of the first run falls in the second run, the other racer will be declared the winner.
Awards: Traditional jars (filled with candy) will be given to top 4 places. Ribbons to #6-10 based on two run qualifier combined times.

Why the dual format?
We recognize that this is an early season race and that many racers will have limited training time prior to this event. We feel that this type of course, which by it's nature can't be too technical, is ideal for getting racers ready for the season and for letting the skis run. We also believe that dual racing, besides being a blast for the kids, brings out a different level of competitiveness that is typically seen in our traditional races. Finally, the shootout format will give racers an extra incentive to have even more fun at this race.

Important notes:
- As noted above, time and weather could impact our ability to run the shootout. At this point in time we can't see a reason why this couldn't happen but this is ski racing and strange things can happen. Your racers and coaches cooperation in running the two qualifying runs will only improve our chances of making this happen.
- Coaches of racers who qualify for the shootout need to make sure their racers understand the format and are at the start at the time requested. After finishing their shootout run, they will need to get back to the start as soon as possible as we'll be running racers quickly.
- This is an open race so entries need to be sent in. Racers in our NHARA region will not be automatically entered unlike our NHARA regional qualifier events.

We hope you and your program will consider joining us on 12/29. We are confident that your kids will have a blast.
